It seems like only yesterday that the folks at Apple made their computers glorified Unix boxes. You know the formula: Unix + crappy GUI + proprietary hardware + extra high price = Macintosh. Apparently things at Apple are changing. According to a Washington Post article, Apple is abandoning IBM and will begin using Intel chips in their computers.
For me, this news is doubly humorous. I’ve learned to hate IBM and its products over the past few years, so this blow to their revenue stream definitely brings a smile to my face. But on top of that, I get to see this company - who has brainwashed their users into believing that the hardware the Macs use is better hardware - abandon the “better hardware” for what 97% of the marketplace has been using all along.
This is just another step in the Mac’s evolutionary process. It started out as a proprietary blob (and a useless one at that) and slowly evolved into a glorified version of Unix. Now it evolves even further into a glorified Unix box running on hardware that Unix is used to seeing.
So what’s the difference between the Mac servers to come and the Unix servers in my data center? Several thousand dollars. At least.
This post will be short since it hurts to type. The heat is radiating off of my skin. I think I need to go soak in a tub of aloe.
In other news, the Rome Braves lost today. Oh, and I saw this guy there wearing a pink shirt. Yeah, he looked pretty gay.
We have a problem. Usually I’m not one who cares about what people wear. Make sure your [whatever body parts] are covered, and I say go for it. But there’s a problem in America today. And it’s a problem that needs to be addressed.
Real men don’t wear pink. It’s that simple. Guys, don’t fall into the mind control games of the department stores. They’re plotting against you to humiliate you and let your women take over your lives.
You heard it here first.
This happens to me all the time. I’ll have a great idea for a product, service, or improvement to the internet and somebody will come along and steal my idea. Well, folks, it’s happened to me again.
According to a ZDNet article, ICANN approved the use of the .xxx domains. Similar to .com, .net, or .org, these new domains will make web sites of adult nature more obvious to the innocent web user. This certainly won’t eliminate pornography from the other TLDs, but it would give pornographers their own special place away from everybody else online. I can hear you thinking, “wow, that’s a great idea!” And you’re probably thinking that because it was my idea about 6 years ago. Though most of my ideas are wonderful, I’m not so sure about this one.
We’ll never get porn to leave .com, .net, and .org alone, so we are really just giving pornographers more space to spread their, um, merchandise.
We’ll never keep people (like me, for instance) from gobbling up good domain names in the .xxx realm just to resell them to folks in the porn industry.
And what about the corporate porn spoof sites that will come from this? Burger King Bimbos at www.burgerking.xxx, Symantec sleaze at www.symantec.xxx, Naked Homer at www.thesimpsons.xxx. The horrible list never ends.
And what about www.moreron.xxx? We’re not going there. I promise.
My house has been quiet for just over a week now. My wife and kids are in Chicago with my inlaws until Tuesday. I’ve enjoyed some things about the week: eating when I get hungry, doing what I want to do, sleeping until almost 1:00 in the afternoon on Memorial Day, and falling asleep with Sports Center on the TV. But I miss my family.
Brett talked to me on the phone for the first time today. And Kaitlyn is anxiously awaiting the package I mailed to her today. She’s got candy, coloring pages, and $3 (for an Icee) coming her way. It’s nothing she couldn’t have gotten from her Grandma and Papa, but it’s from me, so it’s extra special.
I had a special treat on Saturday. After seeing my friends Jill and Andy play a concert in the great state of TN, I watched their kids for a short time while Jill and Andy sold and signed CDs for their public. They have an energetic boy who is 3 and a sweet little girl who is 1. Both were so loving and full of energy. It was a real treat to hang out with those little Gullahorns for a while. I think Jill has mentioned a thousand times that they appreciated somebody watching the kiddos for them, and though I did do it to be helpful, I found that I appreciated them more than they appreciated me.
That open, trusting, child-like love that just oozes out of little kids - especially ones that come from loving families - is so refreshing. Of all the things that ooze out of my kids, I miss the outpouring of love the most. They’ll be home soon though, and there’ll be stuff oozing out all over the place.
Tonight I want to put in a shameless plug for the good folks that host this web site. Safebrowse.com has an internet content filter product called Safe Eyes. In the June 2005 issue of Consumer Reports magazine, Safe Eyes was ranked the best filtering software on the market, beating out folks like Microsoft, McAffee, and Norton.
So congrats to the guys over at SafeBrowse. Check them out if you need an internet content filter or parental control software.
