Now These Three Remain

3 more. That’s it. I’ve got only 3 more shows to hear before I’m through with step 1 of the Appendix A process. There’s an Atlanta show on cassette (1999 era) and 2 MDs - one unlabeled show and one Missouri show from 2002.

Step 2 is compiling a list of songs to make the final cut. I’ll be putting that together this week after I finish the final 3 shows.

Step 3 will be underway late this week. I’ll be actually pulling songs from MD (or CD or cassette) and putting together the audio files to send back up to Nashville.

After that, it’ll be out of my hands and up to Andrew to finish up the project. Currently, there’s no release date (that I know of) - only that I think it’ll be done sometime in 2005.

We will all be thankful for your thoroughness and organization. Are alot of these “thumbs up/down” calls or are they “got a better/interesting version elsewhere” decision?

Ron @ 2:36 pm:

Several weeks ago I sent AP a list of songs I’d like to see on the CD. He gave “non veto” approval (i.e. “yeah, that sounds good. see what you can find”) to most of what I threw his way.

This way I was able (am able) to listen for specific songs in the concerts. I heard all of them (all the way through) in case any one performance of a song stood out so much that it was moved from the “probably not” pile to the “probably worth considering.” I found one like that last night that I’ll have to go back and listen to again when it’s not 1:30 a.m.

The songs that we know we want to put on the CD are a “find a better performance” case, where I’ll go back and listen to that one song over and over (and over and over) to find the best one. For example, I’d eliminate all versions of “Land of the Free” without the charango. Then I’d judge vocals (AP and BGV) and instruments and volumes to pick the best one. Chances are good that AP will end up with a couple copies of some of these songs to choose from.
