is that $2.89/gallon? we’re paying $1.40/litre or approx $4.20/gallon

well, you’ve got to convert those Australian dollars to US dollars to get the real comparison.
Google tells me that $1AU = $.7696US. Your $4.20 is equal to $3.23 here. And, yes, that’s obscene. But the whole point here was that gast is DOWN to $2.89/gallon.
