Schadenfreude

Schadenfreude is some German word that means you take joy in the misfortune of others. We’ve got some serious schadenfreude going on in my house these days.
Last month, I asked the good people with the Paulding County Department of Public Safety to come do something about my idiot neighbor that refuses to mow his lawn. They wrote him a ticket. He had until Monday the 12th to either pay the fine or appear in court before a judge. He paid the fine. $202.50! How awesome!
So on Tuesday I called the courthouse to make sure that this issue was resolved (because you have to wait until one ticket is resolved before you can file another complaint). Once the nice lady told me it was completed, I called the Department of Public Safety again. They went out to his house and issued another ticket.
The lady who called me about it said the neighbor was furious and demanded to know who was complaining against him. She wouldn’t tell him, but she said that it is something he can lookup at the courthouse. He’s too lazy to mow his lawn, so I know he isn’t going to go through the red tape at the courthouse to get this information.
So now he has to pay another fine. It would be safe to assume that this ticket will be at least another $200 for him, and, if it’s like other government fines, it would double to $400. How awesome.
Then, if he gets another ticket, he has to go before a judge. There’d be no paying fines at that point. Wonderful!
So we’ll see if this will finally get that idiot to mow his lawn. You, of course, will get updates on the situation as updates become available.

You should ofter to mow his lawn for about 30 bucks an hour, you’d make some money and he’d save some. hah….gosh 200 bucks, that’s a lot of money….it’s kinda sad that when i got a ticket for going 65 in a 25 (heh, i was 17) i had to pay about a 70 bucks, when i hit a parked car and left the scene (didn’t think i hurt anything, he i was young and dumb, also 17 i think) i didn’t have to pay anything, but this guy doesn’t mow his lawn and he gets fined 200.
As a side note, I’m really glad that there are people like you who complain about things such as these. There’s a lot of people (like me) who are too afraid or lazy to complain about anything. You keep on a truckin, mister!

You don’t sound like a christian, Ron.

Wouldn’t it be funny if somewhere out there there’s a blog with this guy complaining about how his neighbor keeps turning him in for not mowing his grass? I know he’s too lazy to even bother with that, but it’s a funny thought, nonetheless.

Ron, you never responded to Richard’s comment.

Hi Arthur. Welcome in from the land of the lurkers.
I’ve not yet responded to Richard for a couple of reasons. First, I know him just well enough to think he might throw a little sarcasm my way. Second, I know him just well enough to think he might not use sarcasm at all. So I’ve been thinking a bit about this post and my whole reasons for the “neighbor” series of posts lately.
While I’ll admit that I am glad the county is getting involved with the issue of my bad neighbor, I’m not as thrilled about it as this post would make it sound. Lately I’ve been trying to write a post, save it, come back, read it again, and then post it. That way I think more about what I say. This is one that I rushed, and now that I read it again, it looks really cruel.
Richard, I’ve thought about it and I’ve come to the conclusion that my excitement about his troubles (especially the way it came across here, but also the actual level of excitement) was getting out of hand. So thanks for the comment. Iron sharpens iron.

Glory to God.
Ron, I am happy that my comment was received well, and brought about my intended goal of self examination.
Looking at it now, I realize it may have sounded like I was questioning whether or not you are a christian, or the sincereity of your faith. It doesn’t appear you took it that way, and I am glad. In any case, I want to be clear that that wasn’t what I was saying.
God bless you
(and your lazy neighbor!)
