Diabetic Cat
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
We found out today that our cat is diabetic. How strange is that? Apparently it’s pretty rare for cats to get diabetes, and only about 20% of those are female. My inlaws have a cat (female) with diabetes as well. The vet was shocked that we knew anybody with a cat that had diabetes.
This just adds to our luck with cats:
Cat #1 - Death by foot
Cat #2 - Feline Leukemia
Cat #3 - (this one) Diabetes
Cat #4 - Satan in feline form. We gave him away.
Diabetes is better than death by foot. I’ll admit that.

What is wrong with your vet that he thinks diabetes is so rare? Granted, I would say it is more common in dogs than in cats, but it is not uncommon in cats. Especially if the cat is overweight and older… My family’s cat (female) is diabetic. It kills me each time I go home to see how much worse she’s gotten, because they refuse to treat her… I hope that you are treating your cat.
Ron @ 8:07 am:
Oh yeah, we’re treating her. We’re trying some pill, but if that doesn’t work, we’ll have to give her shots. And she’ll have to eat some special food. We’re getting all the stuff today.

Dare I ask the meaning of Death by Foot?…..
Ron @ 10:26 pm:
it means what you think it means.
but, for the record, it was an accident. I wouldn’t do that on purpose.

Maybe it’s time to just give up on cats–you’re 0 for 4 at this point.

“Death by foot.” That is truly hilarious, though maybe not so funny if it were my cat. Sorry for laughing.
On a more serious note, we put our diabetic cat to sleep recently. The pills didn’t work and the shots didn’t work. And she was old–17. I hope you have better treatment results than we did.
Ron @ 11:13 pm:
Hey Curt,
The “death by foot” was honestly a complete accident. It wasn’t funny then, but now, in a way, it kinda is.
I’m sorry to hear about your cat. Ours is 7 and seems to be responding well to the treatment. She doesn’t fight me when it’s time for her pill; she eats her new food; and she’s put on some weight that she had lost. We’re taking her back to the vet at the end of October for them to test her blood sugar levels again.

My cat has diabetes; she was really bad until I changed her diet and started her on some supplements. I never gave her the first insulin shot and she is thriving a year later. My treatment is highly effective and she won’t go into a diabetic coma if I miss a treatment or two or three. She had all the classic symptons and the peripheal nerve damage- eyes, kidneys, leg problems. It makes me wonder why vets do not know about alternative treatments or they do know and just won’t share this knowledge because of $$$.

Ron, please visit this website [ https://www.yourdiabeticcat.com ]and read about the protocol developed by Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins. Cat’s have shown up to an 80% remission rate of diabetes using this protocol within the first 6 months after diagnosis. If you wait too long, the chances get slimmer.
Another good resource for information about giving your cats insulin and home blood glucose testing is https://www.felinediabetes.com.
My cat has been diabetic for 5 years and is VERY healthy. I just wish I had known about Dr. Hodgkins protocol back in 2002.
Best luck to you and your kitty,
Kellie
