I Hate BellSouth

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

BellSouth is the worst company I’ve ever dealt with.  They’re not just the worst telco, they’re the worst company.  Here’s a glimpse of my day:

09:05 - “Hey Ron, is the internet circuit down?”
09:38 - After determining that it is not my problem, I call BellSouth.  Justin tells me that they’ll send it to testing and I should get a call back within the hour.
10:42 - Some woman calls me to tell me that it has been sent to a technician “in the field.”
13:26 - After 3 hours of silence, I call for an update.  Jeff tells me that there is no change in status.
14:43 - I call for another update. Sandy tells me the technician just got the ticket and that he is on his way.
15:28 - Technician arrives and resolves problem.
16:02 - Blog about how slow BellSouth is and about their poor customer service practices.

So it took 6+ hours to resolve an internet circuit problem - not too bad?  Well, the guy had it fixed in about 10 minutes, but it took 6 hours to get him here.  I’d think BellSouth could do better than that.

Unfortunately, we can’t exactly run to another provider for our data.  BellSouth has the last mile coming into our building, so if we went with somebody else for data, when problems came up, there would be a lot of finger pointing and blaming the other guy.  At least with the way things are now, everybody knows it’s a BellSouth problem, and we just have to wait for their tech to finish his afternoon nap and come resolve the issues at hand.

Sasha @ 12:25 am:

I would have to disagree and say that the worst customer service comes from Cobb EMC. At work once they spent an hour arguing with me on the location and adress of the store I worked in at the time! The Customer Service Representative kept insisting that our adress was 4175 despite the fact that I kept telling her it was 4475. She wasn’t confused, her computer said it so I couldn’t possibly right even though I had worked there for well over a year and wrote my address daily on outgoing packages! She made me call the home office and have them officially change the stores records with them before she would send someone out to fix our problem. It took two days!

Ron @ 10:21 am:

That’s funny. I’ve dealt with Cobb EMC in the past and had bad experiences, too. They haven’t (mis)treated me like BellSouth has, so for now at least, BellSouth still holds the record for worst company ever.

I’ve dealt with them for business phone service, business data, personal local phone, long distance, cable tv (bellsouth entertainment), cellular (bellsouth mobility, now cingular). EVERY time (without exception), BellSouth has shown their regular poor service and support.

I am happy to say that not one penny of my paycheck goes to bellsouth. No home phone, comcast internet, comcast tv, verizon cell phones….yeah, I might only be one person, but TAKE THAT, BellSouth!

The Spine Doctor @ 3:52 pm:

The best/worst experience I’ve had so far was with Cingular. After changing to a smaller amount of minutes because we were stacking up rollover minutes fast enough to erase the national debt. (there’s a story there too, maybe another time.) =) So two months after we lowered the minutes I received a bill with so many numbers in it they couldn’t fit in a decimal point (no joke).

The local ijit had stripped all of our add-on plans from our service. When I called the regional cutomer service, they told me to “never” deal with the local ijits, went back through the past several months of charges and resorted them with the correct filters. They had it fixed in two days.

I was happy, in the end.

You should have the ordeal that I had with bellsouth… I was trying to get new lines installed for my business. They said they would do it monday. They never showed up… I called at 2:30 monday evening, they said the order had been cancelled. Evidently the customer service rep got the tax id number digits transposed, and when they looked it up, they thought it was fraud, so they cancelled the order, never called, nothing… So I get the order reinstated… Then they say they will do it tuesday. The BellSouth service van got lost apparently, b/c the customer service rep gave them the wrong address. So I had waited another 8 hours on tuesday for BellSouth. I called a guy in atlanta who is the executive appeal manager for the president of small businesses. So wednesday rolls around… In the mean time the radio people came by, the newspaper, etc. I had no phone number to give them. So, I finally decided to file a complaint with the public service commission, and send a personal letter to their c.e.o, I finally found his name and address, and plan to mail the entire affair straight to his house. I’ve suggested a few policy changes at bellsouth, such as: If you get wrong information on a new customer, don’t assume it’s fraud, cancel the installation, and never call them. The correct procedure should be: Call the customer, tell them “we may have gotten the wrong information…” and that way, rather than assuming your customers are theives, or fraudsters, and leaving them waiting in an office all day, you can actually resolve an issue, and gain a customer. The other thing I suggested they change is: Don’t ever promise a customer you will do something, and then just lie to them. Nothing in the world makes a customer madder than waiting for 3 days for a no show technician. I know for a fact that being here in the office all day costed me money, b/c I had clients I needed to meet with, but was locked down on waiting for bellsouth to install a phone,b/c someone had to be here…. for 3 days… waiting… My partner was busy taking care of other issues.

Ron @ 2:13 pm:

Oddly enough, we saw a bellsouth van with a guy sleeping in it today when we were coming back from lunch. It was on Roberts Blvd. in Kennesaw, on the corner of Roberts and Barrett Lakes.

B Jones @ 3:05 pm:

BellSouth is STILL, STILL not sufficient for anything, anytime, for anybody.

4 months for MetroE?!? Take that fiber and shove it!

Yeah sure @ 9:32 am:

To all of you who complain about Hellsouth……screw all of you whinning jerks…I work there and between screwed crazy assed customers like you and the freakin nasty assed company (all they care about is the $$$) I feel abused and cynical …. It isn’t bad enuf that we deal with screw ups on a daily basis on the part of other service reps, techs, repair, etc….then we get yelled at by the crazed customer who feels their life depends on their phone, dsl, voice mail or whatever….it is always about us trying to keep them from something…you freakin idiots …we have a quota to meet every month so we aren’t keeping you from any service if we offer it in your area, we want to sell it to you! If we cancel your order for fraud, usually there is something causing that to happen. I speak to 50 people a day and on an average 3 times a day I have someone who trys to set up service in the wrong name, social security, etc. They don’t pay a bill somewhere and when we bring it up in the system it shows the old bill , the child’s ssn, the sisters name on an old acct. QUIT TRYING TO FRAUD THE COMPANY….it wont work as it usually catches up to you sooner or later. All Hellsouth cares about is the MONEY, they don’t care about their customers or employees. Only $$$$$$$$ they aren’t in business to make you or me happy they only want your money and to beat me up to the point where I will quit and go somewhere else so they don’t have topay any retirement. My office has 130 reps … all but about 20 have worked there less that 5years……they fire daily there, if you look crossed eyed they fire you. I have seen people fired for honest mistakes, not deliberate acts…there is no room for error when it comes to this job. I have seen people fired because they were sick too many times, late by 2 min too many times, were perceived as being rude to a customer (when in fact the customer was a demon to them).
BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU THIS……THE MONEY$$ IS ALL BS/ATT CARE ABOUT . If you don’t like the service move to another less expericenced company…..you will like them even less….but do everyone a favor quit calling in about your problems, quit treating a beatup employee like they are dirt (we are more likely to help if you are nice to us) AND MOST OF ALL **************QUIT BITCHING*********

Ron @ 9:40 pm:

To be fair (and I meant to post this about a week ago), I dealt with a guy from the Acworth, GA group that deals with T1 installs. He was OVERLY helpful.

The thing I want to point out here is that I’m not talking about a home user who messed up his DSL connection by unplugging something. I’m not even talking about somebody trying to deal fraudulently with BellSouth. This is a corporate IT guy working with a telco vendor. I can’t even imagine what idiots BellSouth has to deal with on a daily basis, but this is a different type of issue than the typical BellSouth issues with idiot customers.

The final (and really the most frustrating thing) is that I *can’t* drop BellSouth. I would have done that years ago if it were an option. They own the last mile to the building, so I’ve got to deal with them. Right now I’ve got a BellSouth T1 that has CBeyond service on it. (Joseph is helping us move into a new office and setup another T1 like this one.) I’d love to have CBeyond do all the work and manage the lines, but BellSouth owns the line, so I’ve got to deal with them to get the circuit before I can activate services on it. If you know of a way around this, I’d love to hear it.

Melvin @ 8:20 pm:

Hey, This is the God honest truth. If everyone here is getting tired of being screwed by the different service providers especially bellsouth. I have a way that is the straight truth and I am a living witness this works.

How would you like to know that I had bellsouth, brighthouse, and Dish Network. Found out about this new company that I joined and switched all my services and all my friends services over to myself and get a check in the mail for everytime someone uses their cellphone, cable, Internet, Home Phne and in the near future electricity. Email me if you would like more information about the company and I will email you the information for your own viewing.

Carolyn @ 9:24 pm:

I AM sooo hating bellsouth/ at&t right now. I work from home and have to send emails ALL DAY! This service is not allowing me to “compose” email. I have to go to one of my other email accounts to do so. Moving to COMCAST!!!! Put that in your pipe!! I am SOOOO OVER YOU GUYS!

Mickey @ 7:08 pm:

Ron, you have no idea. About one week every month something happens to our DSL for a week as a result of their stupidity. Either a storm that takes 3 days of nagging bellsouth to fix, or closing my father’s (I’m his son)account the same day the bill was due…He was going to pay it later that day! Not the mention the other problems I’ve had with the stupidity of their “highly-trained technicians” reversing the wires when they were “fixing” them. This is unreasonable for me as my scool is based on a home-computer and my resources are entirely online. I may fail this year because of their idiocy.

It upsets me that Bright House isn’t availible in this area.

Andrea - @ 11:26 am:

To the guy who works for them, if you work with them and know how messed up the company is, then you should understand the consumer, i used to be a rep there, and when i tell you that its is exactly what it is, bad support to the reps, lacks of customer service and just frankly not give a flying f*Ck, i had ssupervisors that to not go thru the trouble of dealing with a messed up ticket would tell me to transfer to another dept who had absolutely nothing to do with the matter, and if it came back then hopefully we wouldnt have to deal with it.

As far as do they suck yes very badly, are there other companies less known that suck worse due to their size absolutely, but what they lack in quantity they make up with quality you prick!

I have been dealing with bellsouth for over 5 yrs because they are the only ones who have monopolized the state and work in every area. theyre plans are outrageous and their support terrible.

I have spent numerous hours on the phone TRAINING THEM in customer service and logical thinking, apparently they have the wrong ppl dealing with issues, Ive spoken with 7 reps all in one day who all agree on the same plan of action, with a turn around rate of 24-48hrs only to find out that, 7 ppl who give me the same answer, turn out to be incompetent and the one rep that knows it all better than the last 7 takes longer to resolve. Im very frustrated with they way they handle things. that they could definitely go the extra mile of course other companies do why cant they? cuz they send their call centers to 3 party center or to outside the US. (not the Indians have fault, they are doing what they are taught to do and they are alot nicer!!)

SO F*CK U.

Matthew @ 10:13 am:

Cobb EMC sucks not only because I am trapped using them as a provider, but I am at their mercy when it comes to a simple, basic request. I have been a consistantly on-time paying, good customer since 1989. For the past eight years I’ve been trying to get my ex-wife’s name off the bill with out success. The customer no-service personnel pawn me off from one non-helful person to the next just to hear that I will have to pay a $200 deposit to have my ex’s name removed. Both our names are on the this account. The blasted $200 deposit was paid back in 1989, and I have never been late making a payment in all these years. I consider myself a great customer as far as my payment track record. So, why can’t anyone just take her name off the account and be done with it? What is with all this hoop jumping and nonsense? Then one crack head requested that I send a copy of my divorce papers to prove she is my ex! WTF? “They are worried that she might come back after eight years and complain about her name being removed from the account.” How about a pint of blood and a retinal scan to prove it’s me calling? I’ve even asked to have to account cancelled to get her name off–my info is still the same–then apply my orig deposit that is still on the books. Then I was told they would need to run my credit again? It’s a friggin electric bill, not a secret code to the national treasury. This is how they treat a great 19 year customer? Grrrrrr! Of course, I have to use Cobb EMC since they are the only service provider for my area. I will patiently wait for deregulation of the electric companies and take my business elsewhere.

Even contacted the BBB about them, they stood firm on their actions… or lack thereof
